Wisdom Teeth Removals

About Wisdom Teeth Adults have up to 32 teeth, of which four are wisdom teeth and these are the last to come through the gum. They are the one's right at the back of the mouth and usually not push through the gums until late teens or even late twenties.
When Does A Wisdom Teeth Need To Be Removed? If there is enough room in the mouth the wisdom teeth will come through (erupt) in a useful position and there will only be minor discomfort as they erupt. However, wisdom teeth can cause problems if there is not enough room in the mouth, as the wisdom tooth erupts at an angle and gets stuck against the tooth in front; the dentist will describe this as "Impacted".

Impacted wisdom teeth can be very painful and are extremely vulnerable to infection. They can also cause bleeding and swelling of the gums and crowding of the other teeth, pushing them out of proper alignment. Impacted wisdom teeth can even cause bad breath and headaches.
What Should I Expect When I Have A Tooth Extracted?

Your dentist will be able to assess whether there is sufficient room for the teeth to come through by taking an CT and x-ray which will show the position of the root. Once the scan have been taken, your dentist will be able to tell how easy or difficult it will be to remove the tooth, your dentist will only recommend taking out wisdom teeth if

  • The teeth are not able to fully erupt through the gum and are causing an infection in the surrounding tissue; this is known as Pericoronitis.
  • There is decay present - wisdom teeth will often decay as it is very difficult to clean them as thoroughly as your other teeth.
After the tooth is removed, you may need stitches. Some stitches dissolve over time and some have to be removed after a few days. Your dentist will tell you whether your stitches need to be removed. A cotton gauze pad placed over the would will help stop the bleeding. Most patients recover in just a day or two.
